I am a photographer of environments
and emotional states.

My photographic practice explores the spaces between the navigated binaries, between what can and cannot be, between what we cherish and lose, between what has existed and what has passed, and between joys, wishes, and fears.

Artist Statement Erika Norton-Urie

I am a photographer of environments and emotional states. My photographic practice explores the spaces between the navigated binaries, between what can and cannot be, between what we cherish and lose, between what has existed and what has passed, and between joys, wishes, and fears. My photographs are often spontaneous to capture where my mind might be at a given moment.  Though not topical, they capture the world as it is being changed by humans as reflected in species extinction, climate change, habitat loss and the extreme loss of human life due to the wars that haunt our everyday existence and live with us just below the surface. Through this focus on the natural world, with human nature included, my photographic practice has truth as its subject through the everyday facts or our existence.

Biography

Erika Norton-Urie is a photographer of natures. Her photographic practice involves using both digital and film formats. Occasionally she will employ her large format Graphic View camera to capture a scene she’s studied, preferring a planned photoshoot to capture a tree or a landscape.

Erika was a featured artist in the New York City subway project. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and in the Hudson Valley where she currently resides with her husband and cats. Her artistic practice is that her camera is everywhere she is; walking the streets of Newburgh, NY where resides, or her explorations of the Hudson Valley, or of her favorite New York City parks and seascapes. Erika uses her photographs to communicate urgency to understand and value our life sustaining planet, without traveling to every corner or the world, but to comprehend and appreciate our connectedness to what we live with, in our own back yards or neighborhoods.

Erika was born in New York City in 1963 and grew up in the rural farm country of New Jersey and the Jersey Shore.
